23M.2.SL.TZ1.2

The diagram shows the structure of a cell in the pancreas that secretes digestive enzymes.

(a)

Explain how the pancreas cell carries out its function, with reference to three organelles visible in the diagram.

[3]

Markscheme
  1. genes for digestive enzymes are transcribed in the nucleus;
  2. rough ER/ribosomes produces/synthesizes enzymes/proteins;
  3. mitochondrion produces ATP to provide energy for protein/enzyme production;
  4. Golgi apparatus/body processes enzymes/proteins
    OR
    Golgi apparatus/body packages enzymes into vesicles;
  5. vesicles carry enzymes to (plasma) membrane
    OR
    vesicles secrete enzymes by exocytosis;

Function must be attached to the name of the organelle to earn the mark.

Credit may be given for named pancreatic enzyme for mp-a or mp-b

Examiners report

The role of the mitochondria and Golgi body or ribosomes was often given, but other organelles were not.
Vacuoles were mixed up with vesicles.

(b)

The pancreas secretes lipase into the small intestine.

(b.i)

Outline the function of lipase.

[1]

Markscheme

digestion/hydrolysis/break down of lipids/fats/triglycerides (into fatty acids and glycerol);

Examiners report

For (b)(i), unsuccessful candidates were very general saying breakdown molecules without including the substrate.

(b.ii)

State one other enzyme secreted by the pancreas.

[1]

Markscheme

amylase / endopeptidase / trypsin / trypsinogen / protease;

Accept other verified pancreatic enzymes.

Examiners report

For (b)(ii), insulin was often given as well as maltase and lactase which are secreted from the lining of the small intestine.
