22N.1.HL.TZ0.19

Two masses M and m are connected by a string that runs without friction through a stationary tube. Mass m rotates at constant speed in a horizontal circle of radius 0.25 m. The weight of M provides the centripetal force for the motion of m. The time period for the rotation of m is 0.50 s.

What is mass of Mmass of m?

A.  1

B.  2

C.  4

D.  8

Examiners report

G2 comments pointed out a potential notation conflict between the unit of distance (0.25 m) and the label 'm' used to donate one of the masses. In this question however, the letter 'm' does not refer to mass as a physical quantity but it is used as a label for a particular object, and therefore it has not been typeset with italic font.

The exact answer in this question, obtained by equating weight to the magnitude of the centripetal force, is 4π210. Since π2 is approximately 10, the nearest alternative is C.
