aorta;
Most candidates accurately identified the aorta.

Explain the function of the left ventricle.
[2]
- contracts to generate high pressure / pumps blood at high pressure;
- pump blood (through the aorta) to all parts of the body (apart from the lungs);
- receives blood from the left atrium;
- contraction is stimulated by the AV node;
(c) was answered with marking point b regularly. However, there were some concerning answers such as: "oxygenate the blood". Few mentioned contracting to maintain pressure. Candidates were relatively unsuccessful at earning full marks for this question.
