To obtain the mark for (a), candidates needed to indicate both the superior and inferior vena cava. The inferior vena cava was often omitted.

Explain the function of the left ventricle.

  1. contracts to generate high pressure / pumps blood at high pressure;
  2. pump blood (through the aorta) to all parts of the body (apart from the lungs);
  3. receives blood from the left atrium;
  4. contraction is stimulated by the AV node;
Examiners report

(c) was answered with marking point b regularly. However, there were some concerning answers such as: "oxygenate the blood". Few mentioned contracting to maintain pressure. Candidates were relatively unsuccessful at earning full marks for this question.
