- front limbs modified to flippers provide a large surface area/streamlined for steering;
- tail has flukes to increase the thrust when moved up and down;
- streamlined body/ skin without hair allows swift movement as resistance to water is minimized;
- presence of blowhole at the top of the head allows them to breathe quickly and easily when they rise to the surface;
- no connection between mouth and trachea/ airways prevent water entering the lungs;
