Force vs displacement graphs

It is straightforward to calculate work done and energy changed using the equation when the force is constant.

If the force varies, we can use a graph of force against displacement.

Elastic Ep and Hooke's law

A spring that obeys Hooke's law will provide a force that is proportional to extension. Therefore, the graph of force vs extension is linear. The work done stretching the spring is the area under this graph.

Gravitational Ep far from the Earth

Potential energy should be called positional energy; it is the energy a body has due to its position. This is equal to the amount of work done putting it there from a position of zero potential energy (an infinite distance away from the Earth).
