Glossary of Terms

In your Paper 1 exam, it won't be enough to identify an example of onamatopoeia. Or, in Paper 2, it won't be adequate to suggest the novel you are writing about is rich in metaphor. Both examples tell your reader very little of any significance. This is not to suggest that understanding linguistic and literary terminology is worthless. That isn't so; it's useful, for example, to identify an example of onamatopoeia where you can suggest how it contributes to the construction of meaning or effect. If it is onomatopeia, call it that. We don't suggest you learn or memorise the terms on this page. Instead, use the page as a helpful reference guide or for casual browsing.
