Marking Criteria - The Basics

Let's be really clear about this: Knowing the marking criteria for each of your assessment components is a really good idea. Of course, you have more subjects that you have to study beyond English A Language and Literature. In fact, if you are studying for the full IB Diploma, you will have five additional subjects to study, you must complete an Extended Essay (EE), a course in Theory of Knowledge, and you must fulfill the requirements for Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). It's a lot to contend with! Nevertheless, you should aim over time to develop a broad sense of how you will be assessed in each course component. You don't have to know the detail. That is unlikely to help you. Instead, learn the basics of the marking criteria for each assessed task. It will help! Below, you can read, in brief outline, the marking criteria that matter, and an explanation of what it means.

External assessment

Paper 1: Guided textual analysis

 

Standard Level (SL)

A: Understanding and interpretation - Do you understand the text? Do you show insight and understanding into the texts subtelties and implications? Do you support your claims with well-chosen references to the text? (5 marks)

B: Analysis and evaluation - Do you show, through considered analysis and evaluation, an understanding of how the language of a text and the choices writers make establish meaning? (5 marks)

C: Focus and organisation - Do you present your ideas in a consistently focused and coherent way? Is your analysis organised? (5 marks)

D: Language - Is your language clear, carefully chosen, and precise? Is your register (i.e. formality, style, word choice) appropriate, and do you use terminology effectively? (5 marks)

 

Higher Level (HL)

B: Analysis and evaluation - Do you show an understanding of the choices made by writers, including aspects of language, technique, and style, to establish meaning? Do analyse and evaluate the works you have read to show an understanding of similarities and differences as you compare and contrast? (10 marks)

C: Focus and organisation - Do you present your ideas in a consistently focused and coherent way? Is your argument organised? Do you discuss your works in a more or less equal and balanced way? (5 marks)

D: Language - Is your language clear, carefully chosen, and precise? Is your register (i.e. formality, style, word choice) appropriate, and do you use terminology effectively? (5 marks)

 

Higher Level (HL)

In view of your chosen focus or topic, do you draw meaningful and insightful conclusions? Do you support your claims with appropriate references to the work or text(s)? (5 marks)

B: Analysis and Evaluation - Do you show, with regard to your focus or topic, an understanding of the choices made by writers, including aspects of language, technique, and style, to establish meaning? Do you develop an argument that is evaluative and persuasive? (5 marks)

C: Focus, organisation, and development - Do you present your ideas in a consistently focused and coherent way? Is your argument organized? Do you effectively embed supporting examples into your argument? Do you develop your argument? (5 marks)

D: Language - Is your language clear, carefully chosen, and precise? Is your register (i.e. formality, style, word choice) appropriate, and do you use terminology effectively? (5 marks)

B: Analysis and evaluation - Do you show an understanding of the choices made by writers, including aspects of language, technique, and style, to establish meaning in relation to the global issue you have chosen? (10 marks)

C: Focus and organisation - Do you present your ideas in a consistently focused and coherent way? Is your argument organized? (10 marks)

D: Language - Is your language clear, carefully chosen, and precise? Is your register (i.e. formality, style, word choice) appropriate, and do you use, for example, tone and rhetorical strategies to enhance your oral delivery? (10 marks)
