May 2022 - Examinations in the Epoch of Corona

In the era of the pandemic, the Language A: Language & Literature course was modified for the first set of examinations and those modifications remain for M22. Here you will find out how and what the implications are for the remaining components.

M22 Components & Weightings

With amendments made to the majority of the courses for the M22 examinations, the English A: Language & Literature course is predominantly affected by the removal of the Paper 2 assessment for these first examinations. All of these amendments and accommodations can be seen here

This amendments naturally affects the weightings for the other components for the course. The new weightings for the first examinations can be seen here:

Implications for Study

At Standard Level, the removal of Paper 2 puts enormous emphasis on getting the Individual Oral right, and on being well-prepared to score effectively in Paper 1. At Higher Level, there is a proportional rise in the weighting of each of the remaining components, but there remains a heavy weighting for Paper 1 (half of the final grade).

It is always challenging - however well-trained and well-prepared you are - to read a challenging text without assistance and produce an effective analysis of what it means (within a language & literature and internationally-minded context) and how meaning is created. Paper 1 can be the unseating of many a good student. For you M21 students, your performance in this assessment is worth more than in normal times.
