Electromagnets

Moving charges (e.g. in any electric circuit!) produce a magnetic field.

The connection between electricity and magnetism is said to have been discovered by chance by physicist Hans Christian Oersted. It is possible that John Brown the baker had already noticed it. Would this count as a discovery?

Essentials

Straight wire

The magnetic field around a current-carrying straight conductor forms concentric circles. The direction of the field is found using the right hand grip rule.

Loops of wire

See how to add the fields of each loop of coil when forming a solenoid.
