Individual school approach

Introduction

The responsibilities of the School, the Supervisor and the Student together with any other agencies are obviously inter-related. Equally, different schools have different set-ups, constraints, timetables and number of Diploma students etc. It can be really helpful, if not essential, to draw up a table listing all the responsibilities of all stakeholders as it applies to your own particular school to ensure that nothing is missed. Equally it is essential to have a clear timetable for the whole process of Extended Essays from start to finish for your own school. Everyone can then clearly see when deadlines occur and who is responsible for organising and implementing them. Strictly speaking it is probably the responsibility of the person in charge of Extended Essays in your school to provide these two documents. However by drawing up your own it will make you much more aware of how the whole process operates and you will be in a strong position to contribute to your whole school’s policy.

Exercise 1

Make a table containing five columns. The headings at the top of each column should be:

SupervisorChemistry Teacher School  Student Other

(Note that I have added the Chemistry teacher as one of the stakeholders as the subject teacher may or may not also be the supervisor. Under the heading ‘other’ you might like to consider the librarian, parents, the IB, other outside bodies, etc.)

Make a list of the responsibilities appropriate to each heading.

I have provided below one example you can download of a completed responsibilities table which you might like to refer to after you have completed your own.

Exercise 2

Draw up a timetable for your own school with the exact dates for the whole process from start to finish. Remember to include all deadlines and list who is responsible for each action. Note that schools vary as to exactly when they start and finish the process. However it is generally though best to have completed it by the end of the first term in the second year as students are then able to concentrate more on their six diploma subjects rather than still trying to finish their Extended Essay.

I have provided one example you can download of a typical timetable for a school where the students will be submitting their Extended Essays in May 2023.
